Turkey Earthquake: Impacts to Energy Assets

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Antakya, Turkey on February 6, 2023, resulting in over 50,000 deaths (and counting), over 100,000 injuries and damaging buildings and infrastructure.

From Adapt Ready’s Energy Risk Assistant (ERA), we also saw that the disaster affected six natural gas power stations and 42 wind farms which collectively generate enough electricity for roughly 1 million people. According to our initial analysis, corroborated by news reports, these power generation facilities escaped without significant damage.

There have been reports of one gas pipeline being disrupted, which ERA identified among several in the region. Based on our analysis there could very well be damage to these other important structures that haven’t yet been uncovered or reported.

There have also been reports of power disruption, but it appears that the generators responsible for supply were mostly unaffected.
